French Sulfides & Cameos 4
_Another sulphide picturing Charles X came from the collection of the Marquis de Baillou, Chateau d'Angerville, and was probably made in Bohemia; for the medallion placed on a protruding clear ruby base, is accompanied by a vine pattern in gold around the rim and sides, and also has the enameled decorations characteristic of Bohemian glass. It is extremely heavy, and has a deep star-cut base which extends to the outside rim of the weight. The cutting, moreover, has a different feeling from that found on French weights.

_Medallions frequently found arc those of Count de Chambord, Louis Philippe, Lafayette, Victoria and Albert, in their younger period, and George Washington. The profile of Washington is from a painting by Gilbert Stuart which shows the Roman nose. It is somewhat surprising that we do not find more of the fine profile of Washington by John Trumbull. The foregoing list is by no means complete, for the likenesses of scores of eminent men and women found their way into the cameos.
_Many of the sulphides, besides those made at St. Louis, Clichy, and Baccarat, were made in various factories. They were frequently made for merchants and signed with the merchants' monograms. Such a signature indicates a good manufacturer, although it must be recognized that many fine specimens lack any such trade mark.
