More French, Cilchy Paperweights 3
_The attractive daisy is likewise unique, for the construction of its center does not resemble that of the known makers. Either or both of these weights may have been made by St. Gobain or Escalier de Cristal. The probability seems to favor the second name, which was well known for its excellent medallions.

_Little or nothing is known about the other fine factories in France whose workmen undoubtedly produced paperweights. Few records were kept. Often fine paperweights were masterpieces that glass makers produced when they were through with their mastercraft exams -"Maitre Ouvrier." The weights were made at odd hours for friends or valued clients whom the manufacturer wished to honor with unusual and individual gifts. Even a trip devoted to exploration and research in France might not prove particularly fruitful, for such effort, because of the unfortunate lack of records, has not been especially rewarding here in America. The old Corning factory, for example, produced some of the finest of the American paperweights, including the beautiful Corning magnolia. Yet, until this weight was brought to its attention, the modern Corning management was not aware of its existence.
