French, Baccarat Paperweights 2
_The Baccarat weight shown on the left is similar in design to the two Clichy weights shown below. The signatures are always found slightly to one side of the design, never in the center. Other devices which are familiar in the Baccarat weights are the maltese cross, and canes whose cross sections carry minute images of animals, birds, and butterflies. Baccarat compositions included a wide range of subjects and a greater variety of patterns than any other factory.

_Especially deserving of attention are the Baccarat overlay weights. They began to cut overlay weights about 1870. The surface coatings of colored glass which are called overlays were applied in many colors. In the single overlay, the colors used most frequently are red, dark blue, and green (Plate IV). The Baccarat factory was the only one which made paperweights in the encrusted overlay style (Plate XV).
