Ink Stand Company. Glass Paperweights
_Every patriotic American will appreciate the old rock crystal weight which reproduces Plymouth Rock (Illustration 80). This piece was made by the Ink Stand Company, whose trademark indicates that it was founded in 1876. Molded on the face of this weight is the date 1620, the year in which the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth.
|
_ The weight also reproduces the the crack which was caused in Plymouth
Rock by efforts efforts to raise it in 1778. Around the outside base and
rim is the following inscription, in letters so minute that they can be
read only with the aid of a strong magnifying glass--
"A Rock in the wilderness welcomes our Sires
From bondage far over the dark rolling sea,
On that Holy altar they kindled the fires
Which glow in our bosoms for for thee."
The inscription further states that Mary Chilton was the first to land on Plymouth Rock December 21, 1620.
