Bohemian Paperweights
_lt was in Bohemia that the art of etching on glass with fluoric acid was discovered in 1670. The substance of most Bohemian glass is potash. This produces an extraordinarily hard glass which lends itself readily to deep intaglio engraving. This proces of etching on glass, by the way, was first used in America at the Cambridge factory soon after the Revolutionary War.
_Bohemian glass was in great demand during the Mid-Victorian period. A piece of Bohemian engraved ruby glass was an almost inevitable decoration on every table or mantel of that time. Paperweights of the millefiori type were produced in Bohemia from 1840 to 1850. A few of these have survived with others of the cameo type.
